October 18, 2012: QEP with permits for a four-well pad.
August 22, 2012: random update of pad drilling (XTO, QEP) in Heart Butte.
March 26, 2012: WPX with permits for a 7-well pad.
December 8, 2011: with some very nice IPs being reported by QEP, it was time to update this field; it appears now to be about 128 sections, almost double the size of the original field; this is a very, very good field; it appears to be "owned" by XTO and QEP with some KOG acreage. There are currently four rigs on site in the field. .
February 9, 2011: With more permits in the Heart Butte field, this is a good time to remind folks that the Arrow pipeline is in the Heart Butte field.
February 5, 2011: The Heart Butte field is getting a bit more active, perhaps after the report of the two nice Questar wells each reported IPs of 1,300 bbls. Two more Heart Butte permits were granted on February 4, 2011 -- these to XTO, now owned by XOM.

April 18, 2010: Questar has a pair of snake eyes in the north, #18665 and #18666, MHA 1-06-01H-149-92 and MHA 2-06-01H-149-92, respectively. #18665 reports an IP of 1,271 barrels with a cumulative of 63K barrels in the first five months. Meanwhile, #18666 reports an IP of 1,309 barrels with a cumulative of 31K barrels in the first three months.
March 15, 2010: Peak, North Dakota, LLC, was granted two permits in Heart Butte today; the two permits (18809, Baker 20-34H; 18810, Baker 29-31H) are sited in the same section (section 20), one targets section 20; the other goes south into section 29.
The Original Update
The Heart Butte field caught my eye when I was transcribing the March 24, 2010, NDIC docket. A reminder: the Arrow pipeline.
In case #12284 of the docket, Questar asks that the Heart Butte field be extended by adding adjoining sections to the field, creating 24 new 640-acre spaced units, and a request to drill not more than two (2) horizontal wells on each 640-acre unit. That's a total of 48 new wells. And the Heart Butte is a very small field.
Currently, Heart Butte field is only 66 sections, encompassing most of T149N-92W, and about half of the two sections 148-92 and 149-91. It is located entirely within the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, directly south of and across the river from the exciting Big Bend field, and directly south of New Town, ND. Drilling was delayed in the FBIR due to bureaucratic necessities, but those have been addressed, and it is likely that drilling will pick up. Questar and Kodiak Oil and Gas (KOG) each have one rig in North Dakota (KOG took possession of a second rig in February, 2010, and moved that one to the Bakken in Montana). With a request by Questar to add up to 48 more horizontal wells in Heart Butte, one can reasonably expect to see more activity there.
The Heart Butte field represents on a small scale why the Bakken is so exciting and why producers are moving in more rigs, paying top dollar for mineral acres, and drilling at a furious pace: To date, there are only six producing wells in Heart Butte: four of them are KOG wells and two of them are Peak Oil wells. Of the six, four have announced initial production (IP) numbers. In the "old days" (two years ago) three of these IPs would have been outstanding (465, 711, and 829) but "we've" been spoiled by four-digit IPs elsewhere in the Bakken. Regardless, these are very nice IPs, and, at the end of the day, it will be the total production over the life of the well that matters. Having said that, KOG had a stellar well (#17981, Two Shields Butte 16-8H) with an IP of 1,661. The remaining two wells, both KOG wells, have come off the confidential list as "plugged or producing" but IPs have not been announced (at least I have not seen them). (In the Bakken, "plugged or producing" will end up being a producing well.)
Four wells are on the confidential list (18132, 18455, 18665, and 18666 // Peak, KOG, Questar, Questar). The two Questar wells must be on the same pad; they are only 50 feet apart on the GIS map server.

18988, 1,835
18989, 958
As with most oil fields in the Bakken, there are no hamlets, villages or towns in this field, just beautiful scenery.
